Biography

A Nilesh Fernando is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the department of Economics at King’s Business School.

His research focuses on development and labour economics. His research investigates barriers to labour mobility and technology adoption in the developing world. By identifying how information frictions hinder productivity and economic mobility—whether for Sri Lankan migrant workers or smallholder farmers in India—his work offers evidence-based solutions to improve livelihoods.

Nilesh's research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the Review of Economics and Statistics, the American Economic Review: Insights, the Journal of Development Economics, the Journal of Human Resources, and the Economic Journal.

He was elected a Faculty Affiliate of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD) and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Notre Dame (2016–2025). He completed his PhD at Harvard University and his BA from Hampshire College.
