Biography
My research is focused on the depiction and movements of the medieval knight in thirteenth-century French verse romance. I work with modern drag and trans theory to frame and analyse the performativity and performance of medieval chivalry, handling lesser-studied Arthurian texts and their manuscripts. My project troubles the assumed connection between masculine chivalric behaviour and male bodies, questioning what constitutes (and what is excluded from) the knightly identity. My interests include queer phenomenology, animal theory and tranimality, performativity, drag, and monsters.
I received my BA and MPhil from Cambridge (French and Russian, with specialisms in medieval French and Occitan). I am LAHP-funded and co-run the new LAHP queer network for scholars that work with queer theory. I also co-chair the Queer@King’s reading group.
I am supervised by Dr Alice Hazard (KCL) and Dr Robert Mills (UCL).
