Alicia Burnett

Midwife and Founder of Black Baby Loss Awareness Week

Biography

Alicia Burnett is a proud and committed midwife that believes the best midwifery care is delivered through a holistic approach that focuses on the physical and psychological wellbeing of the mother, birthing person and child. Alicia was invited onto the ITV Lunchtime News in 2020 to share her motivation for pursuing a career in midwifery, and she remains passionate about supporting aspiring midwives to gain a better understanding of the midwifery profession, its potential rewards and existing challenges.

Alicia's advocacy and activism efforts place special focus on the needs of families from Black communities. She founded Black Baby Loss Awareness Week to bring attention to the disproportionately high rates of pregnancy and baby loss in Black communities, and raise Black communities' awareness of the professionals and services that provide care and support for those who have experienced these types of loss. With her personal experience of pregnancy and baby loss combined with her professional experience of supporting bereaved parents, Alicia understands how crucial it is to build supportive, cultural sensitive and understanding networks for those affected.

Alicia has been an active author since she was a student midwife; most recently she co-authored chapter 6 of the 16th edition of Mayes Midwifery, 'Being a Student Midwife', and her work has been featured in numerous well-respected publications including Nursing Standard, Midwifery, Nurse Education Today, The Student Midwife and The Practising Midwife. Alicia was the first student Editor-in-Chief of The Student Midwife journal, and thoroughly enjoyed supporting experienced and novice authors throughout the editorial and publishing process and is actively seeking literary agent representation.
