Biography
Dr Ana Maria Sousa Aguiar de Medeiros joined King's College London Language Centre in 2015. She completed a Political Sciences and French BA (1986) at Boston College and a French Studies MA (1987) at Middlebury College and Sciences Po in Paris. She then studied for a D.E.A (1992) under the supervision of Julia Kristeva at the Université de Paris VII and went on to complete her PhD in French Studies (1994) at Boston College. She speaks Portuguese, French and English. Dr de Medeiros is AULC Chair and Multilingualism Chair in CU.mil.
Dr de Medeiros was a lecturer at the University of Hull (1994-96) and then went on to become a Reader in French Literature at the University of Kent and Director of Kent's Postgraduate Center at Reid Hall (Paris). As Director of King's Language Centre and Head of Department Ana has oversight over the Education Strategy as well as leading the Centre's Executive Leadership team with responsibility for people and planning. She is also a member of CIEL's Executive group with responsibility over Education and Scholarship. She serves as Chair of the Executive committee for the Association of University Language Communities (AULC) and has been appointed as a Multilingualism Chair in Circle U's Multilingualism, Interculturality and Language Lab. Dr de Medeiros also represents the UK's Language Communities within CercleS (European Confederation of Language Centres in Higher Education) as a member of their Coordinating Committee.
Research, Scholarly projects and Academic Awards
Dr de Medeiros is series co-editor for Language Acts and Worldmaking (Hachette) which is currently publishing its sixth volume and is a member of the Language Acts Institute at KCL having being a CI in the related AHRC funded OWRI project. Dr de Medeiros was a consultant in the Horizon 2020 project - Memoirs: Children of Empires and European Postmemories. She is also a member of a Circle U seed funded project on languages and employability. Recently with colleagues from Language Acts she co-wrote a British Academy funded report on Language Skills and Capabilities in the UK Research Base published in 2025. With Dr James Fowler and Thomas Chaurin she has co-written a new Complete French textbook to be published in 2026.
