Biography

Anya Benton is a registered nurse, Nursing and Midwifery Council qualified teacher, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She worked in the National Health Service at a large teaching hospital in central London before transitioning into higher education where she currently works as a Lecturer in Nursing Education within the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care. Her pedagogical and research interests are in advanced practice education in nursing, with an interest in simulation-based education and advanced clinical assessment. These interests stem from her practice experience where she worked in peri-operative care with a focus in immediate post-operative advanced recovery care. She has 8 years’ experience in nursing education working at King’s College London, with 5 years dedicated to being the academic lead for the Recovery Course. Delivered to post-registration nurses working in post-anaesthetic care Recovery Units, this course enhances patient care and promotes professional development within the peri-operative care directorate. She successfully implemented post-anaesthetic care high-fidelity simulation into this course and other pre-registration programmes delivered at King’s College London. This modality of teaching has been well evaluated and continues to support students in going beyond the superficial to develop their knowledge. Anya has experience teaching at an international level, providing teaching delivery of advanced assessment skills and proficiency in clinical decision making at the Ngee Ann Academy in Singapore.
