Barbara Dworakowska (MSci Chemistry, 2015-2019) started on the Science & Engineering Civil Service Fast Stream programme and now works as a Transport Innovation Advisor for the Department of Transport. 

How did your time at King’s prepare you for your career? 

The scientific skills, such as research, data analysis, and critical analysis of literature, have proved indispensable, and some of the scientific knowledge I gained has also been useful in my current role. Taking part in public engagement and science communication events while at King's was also very helpful, one that particularly stands out is the Great Exhibition Road Festival. This has prepared me for aspects of my current role, as I often have to explain technical details to non-technical audiences. 

What are your happiest memories from your time at King’s?

Too many to count! One that stands out is my Master’s project. It was a nine-month laboratory project, which was quite long compared to many other degrees but I loved every second of it - the independence, my lab group, and carrying out real research.

A lot of my happy memories were also made being a part of KCL Badminton, where I was a member for nine years! It was really great for my wellbeing, and I love the people I met there. I was a very active member of the club, serving as captain of the women's and mixed 1st teams and as secretary.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in your field? 

Don't be afraid to change your mind and take risks. Since I was young, my plan had always been to be a scientist, but I realised that there are other exciting pathways that are a better fit for me.
