Beatrice Lombardi

Lecturer in Italian Language Education

Biography

Beatrice Lombardo joined King's College London Language Centre in 2017. She completed her  Modern Languages and Literature BA at the University of Tor Vergata, Italy and her two MAs in Intercultural Relations and International Cooperation from the University of Charles-de-Gaulle - Lille, France. She also completed her teaching Italian as a foreign language with DITALS II at the Università per Stranieri di Siena, Italy.

With over a decade of experience teaching in the UK, France, and Italy, Beatrice delivers Italian language and culture courses at all levels and offers professional development workshops for educators. Her practice is grounded in inclusive pedagogy and informed by ongoing research and reflection. She integrates a wide range of media such as film, music, visual arts, online platforms, and AI tools into her teaching to create engaging, multisensory learning environments that reflect real-world language use. Beatrice also convenes a cross-disciplinary course on Cultural Awareness, which explores how culture shapes communication, identity, and interaction in a globalised world. Designed to be both intellectually stimulating and personally transformative, the course invites students to engage in small-scale qualitative research projects, helping them develop intercultural sensitivity, critical thinking, and academic research skills. A firm believer in the power of education to foster connection and understanding, Beatrice’s teaching philosophy centres on curiosity, communication, and student empowerment. She is particularly interested in the role of neurodiversity in language learning, and in how feedback literacy and educational technologies, especially AI, can be harnessed to make learning more accessible, inclusive, and effective.

Research, Scholarly projects and Academic Awards

Beatrice’s current ongoing projects include, amongst others, a pilot study exploring how AI can support language learners in developing greater linguistic awareness and reducing anxiety around error and assessment. Rather than evaluating written texts directly, the project centres on students’ metalinguistic reflections on AI-generated feedback, encouraging active engagement and deeper, more conscious learning. Another strand of Beatrice’s work rethinks final assessments in language courses, aiming to design tasks that are more authentic and reflective of how learners communicate in contemporary contexts. This project advocates for a shift away from traditional exams toward process-oriented tasks that emphasise reflection and real-world application. She is also developing an interactive podcast series for beginner learners of Italian, designed to be both comprehensive and engaging. Combining scaffolded language input, interactive activities, and cultural insights, the podcast offers an inclusive, flexible learning resource that supports autonomous study while complementing classroom-based instruction.
