Mr Benjamin Russell Lewis

PhD Student

Biography

Ben received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of East Anglia, where he graduated with three academic prizes for the best performance across the School of Biological Sciences. His final year research project was spent at the John Innes Centre testing novel compounds against DNA gyrase for antibiotic potential, under Professor Tony Maxwell. In October 2019, Ben started his PhD in the Reading Group, where he is currently utilising Hydrogen/Deuterium exchange mass spectrometry to interrogate the assembly and dynamics of the AcrAB-TolC multidrug efflux pump.

Thesis Title

Examining the role of structural dynamics in the assembly and function of the multidrug efflux pump AcrAB-TolC

Research Interests

  • Protein chemistry and dynamics
  • Hydrogen/Deuterium exchange mass spectrometry
  • Membrane proteins
  • Native mass spectrometry
  • Antimicrobial resistance
