Research and development

Beverley Hunt supervises clinical fellows and has her own research laboratory. Over the years she has studied many aspects of the prevention and management of thrombotic disorders and acquired bleeding problems, including championing the need to use tranexamic acid (TXA) in traumatic bleeding, post-partum haemorrhage and to prevent surgical bleeding. Currently she is working with Liverpool Tropical Medical School to improve access to TXA in low- and middle-income African countries.

She is also a PI on multiple national trials of thromboprophylaxis; working on antithrombin deficiency and antiphospholipid syndrome.

Current areas of clinical work

• Clinically she cares for patients with complex, high risk, thrombotic disease such as antithrombin deficiency and antiphospholipid syndrome.
• Chair of the Trust Thrombosis & thromboprophylaxis committee since 2011. We run all the guidelines and police prevention of hospital-associated VTE and use of anticoagulants.
• Chair of the GSTT Grand Round team.
• Co-lead of Element 1 of the NHS England Maternal Care Bundle. This work ties in with Thrombosis UK’s focus. The new early pregnancy risk assessment tool is embedded on the Thrombosis UK website, and we are working to increase awareness of clots in pregnancy as our recent MORI poll shows that less the 5% of individual of reproductive age were aware of the risk of VTE in pregnancy and the puerperium.

Recent honours and external work

Co-founder, previous Medical Director and now co-chair of the trustee of Thrombosis UK. Thrombosis UK is the “go to charity for all things related to thrombosis and especially venous thromboembolism in the UK and was the UK best charity of the year in 2012.

• 2019 - Awarded the title of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s birthday honours list for services to medicine.
• 2020 - Awarded the British Society for Haematology medal for service to haematology.
• 2021 - Received an International Society of Thrombosis & Haemostasis Esteemed Career award.
• 2022 - Chair of the ISTH congress committee, which was held at the London Excel centre
• 2023 - Awarded a Royal College of Pathology Achievement award with the four other members of the UK Expert Haematology panel for vaccine- induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT)
• 2022 onward - Cochair of the World Health Organisation living Covid -19 guideline development group
• 2025 onwards - a member of the WHO guideline development group for filoviruses (which cause viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Lassa fever. This year we have written guidance for the management of Ebola, L led in the management of Ebola coagulopathy.
• 2025 - October 7^th Honoured to give the Jaap de Graeff lecture at Leiden University
• 2025 - Invited to become Cochair of element 1 of the Maternal Care Bundle. This was published 6^th January 2026 by NHS England, aiming to reduce death due to VTE in early pregnancy by introducing an early pregnancy VTE risk assessment tool which is both a self-assessment tool and for use by healthcare professionals including abortion care.
• 2026 April - Awarded the 2026 British Society for Haematology Lifetime Achievement Award at their Annual Scientific meeting
• 2026 June - She was elected to become a member of the Council of the International Society for Thrombosis & Haemostasis.
