Biography
Chiara Di Bonaventura is a PhD researcher in the UKRI Safe and Trusted AI Centre for Doctoral Training at King’s College London and Imperial College London. She is also currently an Enrichment PhD Student at The Alan Turing Institute.
Her research focuses on the timely detection and counter-acting of online harms (e.g. hate speech), introducing time-sensitive factors into language processing systems to advance the adaptability of NLP models to language change. For the impact and innovation of her research, Chiara was awarded the prestigious Trustworthy AI Research award by The Alan Turing Institute and The FAIR Foundation in 2024.
Before her PhD studies, Chiara worked as a Research Assistant at Fondazione Debenedetti (2021-2022), working on a multidisciplinary project on Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Political Science. She graduated magna cum laude from Bocconi University with her MSc in Data Science in 2022, and BS in Economics and Social Sciences in 2019. While studying, she completed several research internships at Bocconi Institute for Data Science and Advanced Analytics (2020-2021), EY Digital and Emerging Technologies (2021), Omdena (2020), SDA Bocconi (2019).
Currently, Chiara is a fellow of the King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and she is a member of ML Commons (working on AI Safety benchmarks). She also is a member of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and the Italian Association of Computational Linguistics (AILC).
In her spare time in London, Chiara volunteers as a public engagement speaker, disseminating AI topics to the general public, including family-day workshops, seminars to high-school students, and talks to non-technical audiences like experts in the legal and policy-making fields.
