Biography

Bruno Ferreira is a PhD Candidate in the Department of War Studies and a Brazilian Navy Officer, currently holding the rank of Commander. His research interests include the Maritime Security in the South Atlantic and India Ocean, as well as the significance of maritime geography for Naval Operations, focusing on the role played by oceanic islands. He holds an MA in Naval Sciences from the Escola de Guerra Naval (Brazilian Naval War College). His research at Master’s level concentrated on the strategic value of ‘Andaman and Nicobar’ Islands for India’s National Defence within the context of Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Bruno comes to the War Studies Department after 24 years in the Brazilian Navy. As a Navy Officer, Commander Bruno Ferreira has served as Commanding Officer twice in his career, first on a Hospital Ship (2017) and later on a Patrol Ship (2021) in the Brazil’s Amazon region.

Bruno has researched the impact of India’s militarization of oceanic islands on the Indian Ocean Region in terms of Maritime Security

His current research focuses on the strategic use of Brazilian oceanic islands for the maritime security of the South Atlantic, a doctrinal study aimed at enhancing Brazilian naval power.
