Biography

Dr Dan Cornwell-Groves is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry Education in the Department of Chemistry, King's College London. Dan is also Year 2 Lead, UG Admissions Tutor, Graduate Teaching Assistant Lead, UG SSLC Co-Chair and Study Abroad (Incoming) Tutor for Chemistry.

Dan received a Masters in Chemistry from the University of York (2012), staying to complete a PhD in the research group of Professor David K Smith. During this time, Dan gained experience working in teaching laboratories and assisting in designing practical courses, and in their final year also completed the York Learning and Teaching Award, a programme for gaining further skills in developing, evaluating and reflecting on teaching.

Dan joined the Department of Chemistry at King’s College London in 2016 as a Teaching Fellow, becoming a Lecturer in Chemistry Education in 2019, and Senior Lecturer in 2023.

Dan is also one of the co-organisers for the NMES Education Elevenses, a series of weekly educational meetings run within the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences.

Dan’s pedagogic research looks at developing creative and innovative teaching methods to better engage students, and ways to better understand students’ approaches to learning. They also design and develop new practical experiments based around their interests to be used in undergraduate laboratory modules.

Teaching

Dan teaches on organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and practical chemistry. They also lead on training for Graduate Teaching Assistants within the Department of Chemistry.
