Biography

Professor Dave Hemsley joined the Institute of Psychiatry in 1969 to study for the M.Phil. degree in Clinical Psychology. His undergraduate course was at Magdalene College,Cambridge from 1965-1968. In 1971 he was appointed Lecturer in the Psychology Department,and successively Senior Lecturer,Reader,and in 1991 Professor of Abnormal Psychology. Prof. Hemsley obtained his Ph.D. in 1976. 

Throughout his career he combined academic work with clinical duties within the Bethlem and Maudsley hospitals. From 1986 until retirement in 2009, he was the Course Director of the Clinical Psychology training programme. 

Prof. Hemsley was appointed Emeritus Professor on retirement and continues to teach,supervise and act as an External Examiner. 

Research Interests:

Prof. Hemsley has published numerous publications on a variety of topics although his main focus has been on disturbances of cognition in relation to psychological dysfunction,particularly psychosis. 

Awards:

Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
