Thesis title: HIV prevention and migrants: Experiences of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) among Brazilian men who have sex with men in Lisbon

New HIV diagnoses in Portugal have decreased in the last few years. Nonetheless, men who have sex with men (MSM) remain disproportionately affected. In men born abroad, the highest number of HIV cases in Portugal corresponds to individuals from Latin America. The World Health Organisation recommends that populations with a high incidence of HIV should be offered Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is a pill that prevents HIV. Presently, PrEP is approved in the UK, Portugal, Brazil, and approximately 75 other countries (WHO, 2022). Although Brazilians form the largest migratory community in Portugal, numbering nearly 400,000 people and predominantly residing in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (DN/Lusa, 2023), they are invisible in official data either in relation to HIV infection or PrEP access.

In this context, the overall aim of Fabio's research is to explore the experiences of accessing PrEP among Brazilian MSM migrants in Lisbon. The specific objectives are as follows: 1) To analyse the experiences of Brazilian MSM migrants in Lisbon in accessing and adhering to PrEP, considering potential forms of inequalities in healthcare access. 2) To explore potential strategies these migrants use to access PrEP. 3) To examine how being a migrant impacts their experiences with PrEP access and adherence.
