Biography
Fiona Miller is a Professor of Health Policy and holds the Chair in Health Management Strategies in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. She is a member of the graduate faculty in the School of the Environment and chairs the Research Subcommittee of the University of Toronto’s Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability.
Fiona directs the Centre for Sustainable Health Systems at the University of Toronto and a national initiative for climate action and awareness in healthcare: CASCADES. In these roles, she leads and supports efforts to improve the sustainability of health systems through research, education, practice change, and policy development. As a policy scholar, Fiona brings a critical political economy perspective to the analysis of technological innovation and sustainability transitions.

SHADE sits at the intersection of Sustainability, Health, AI, Digital technologies and the Environment. SHADE is guided by a fundamental question: How should the balance between AI/digital enabled health and planetary health be struck in different areas of the world, and what should be the guiding principles? To address this SHADE promotes interdisciplinary enquiry to understand and make visible sustainable practices situated in specific geographical and societal contexts. Undertaking both normative and solutions based research, SHADE draws on empirical, epistemic and ethical perspectives from philosophy, law, sociology and ethics, as well as from more quantitative approaches such as life cycle sustainability assessment.
