Biography
Dr Joan Madia is Lecturer in Health Economics in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine at King’s College London.
Joan holds a DPhil from Nuffield College, University of Oxford. Prior to joining King’s, he was a Senior Research Fellow in Health Economics and Policy Evaluation at Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, where he remains an Honorary Senior Research Fellow.
He works collaboratively across disciplines to generate evidence that can inform healthcare policy and service delivery, with the aim of improving population health and promoting the equitable and efficient use of healthcare resources.

Joan’s research examines how public policies, healthcare systems and social conditions shape health outcomes and inequalities across population groups. He uses causal inference and applied health economic methods to evaluate health and social policies and healthcare interventions, drawing on large-scale administrative, clinical and survey data. His research spans inequalities in healthcare access and utilisation, infectious and non-communicable diseases, health technology assessment and economic evaluation. His work has been supported by NIHR, ESRC and industry partners.

Joan welcomes students interested in undertaking research in areas related to his expertise, including:
- health policy and economic evaluation;
- inequalities in healthcare access, utilisation and health outcomes;
- infectious and non-communicable diseases; and
- health technology assessment.
He welcomes projects using a range of quantitative approaches, particularly those involving causal inference and applied health economic methods.
