John joined the Department of Political Economy in Oct 2024. His research is on emigration and how the policies of governments in high income countries facilitate the emigration of their own citizens.

John had a 30-year career in international banking before spending more than three years in government in Whitehall as Director General of Exports in the Department for International Trade and as interim chief executive of the UK Infrastructure Bank.

John has an MSc in Global Affairs from King’s College London (2022) and a BA(Mod) in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin (1987).
