Biography

Dr Julia Philippou is Interim Vice Dean (International) and a Reader in Nursing Education. A proud alumna of King’s College London, where she completed her BSc, MSc, and PhD in Nursing, Dr Philippou is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge that generates lasting, positive change in global healthcare education and workforce development.

Dr Philippou’s research is deeply informed by the evolving needs of the healthcare sector, where the demand for highly skilled nurses continues to grow. Her work examines workforce engagement and development, with a particular focus on fostering a culture of quality care. She has led and collaborated in several workforce related projects contributing to enhancing the quality of care through targeted workforce development initiatives nationally and internationally.

With a commitment to advancing global healthcare education, Dr Philippou has significantly contributed to enhancing King’s international influence through the strategic development of innovative and impactful educational partnerships that prepare the nursing workforce for the challenges of modern healthcare. As the Academic Lead for the King’s – Ngee Ann Academy partnership, Dr Philippou successfully led the conceptualisation and accreditation of the first degree programme at King’s to be delivered outside of London. This initiative has significantly contributed to the development of a globally competent nursing workforce, with the programme attracting over 150 international students annually. The programme's success has led to its expansion to include advanced degrees, further aligning with King’s commitment to global educational excellence.

Recognising that a robust nursing education is essential for addressing the complexities of modern healthcare systems, Dr Philippou has been instrumental in designing curricula that not only meet rigorous academic standards but also equip students with the skills necessary to excel in diverse healthcare environments. This approach aligns with the broader recognition that a nursing degree opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities within and outside the healthcare sector, nationally and internationally.

Dr Philippou is dedicated to fostering national and intentional collaborations that advance King’s mission to serve society through education and research. Her work focuses on the development and training needs of the future healthcare workforce, ensuring that educational initiatives remain aligned with the sector’s evolving demands. By aligning educational programmes with sector needs, Dr Philippou ensures that King’s College London remains at the forefront of global nursing workforce development and healthcare education.

Dr Philippou supervises PhD projects focused on international nursing workforce development. These projects reflect her commitment to fostering a globally competent nursing workforce equipped to meet the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.

  • Culture of Care through Workforce Engagement and Development: Researching how workforce engagement and development initiatives can foster a culture of care within healthcare organisations, ultimately improving patient outcomes and staff satisfaction.
