Kevin Fleming started adult life as a physicist before embarking on a full Royal Naval career. His first career stage was as a maritime aviator & instructor. He then focused on delivering education, specialising in leadership, maritime strategy & analysis, critical thinking skills & decision making. Finally, he concentrated on International Defence Engagement & Diplomacy becoming an expert.
Delivering Defence education, he was Director of the RN Division in the UK Defence Academy responsible for developing Command & Staff skills of all intermediate-level RN Officers, followed by a period as Head of Strategy in the Centre for Defence Leadership & Management, facilitating the development of the UK’s most senior military and civil service leaders.
His final appointment before retiring from the RN and joining King’s, was as UK Defence Attaché to Brazil where he forged very strong relationships with the Brazilian Armed Forces, including their military education centres such as the Brazilian Superior War College and Naval War College.
He is an expert Portuguese and professional-level Spanish speaker.

Kevin’s research falls into three main areas: maritime strategy to deliver security in the world’s seas and oceans; maritime domain awareness using multiple data sources, including earth observation, to tackle illegal activity on the high seas and; what role culture plays in preparing leaders and decision makers for the ethical leadership challenges of the 21st Century.
