
Biography

Kris is a Senior AI+ Academic Fellow at King’s College London and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College London. He leads the EpiEng (Epidemiological Engineering) group, which is funded by an MRC Career Development Award and applies engineering methodology to better understand and regulate biomedical systems. Kris has a background in aerospace (MEng, Sheffield) and control engineering (PhD, Cambridge) that he has applied to solve estimation and control problems in molecular biochemistry, invertebrate vision, phylodynamics, infectious disease and public health. Prior to joining King’s, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Zoology Department of Oxford, an advanced research fellow at the School of Public Health at Imperial and a lecturer at the Bristol Public Health Department. He was also a member of Imperial’s COVID-19 response team during the pandemic. His current research interests lie at the intersection of feedback control, AI and infectious disease response. His group i) investigates how model predictive control and reinforcement learning can improve the reliability of public health interventions despite uncertainty in epidemic characteristics, ii) designs local and global algorithms for controlling spread across heterogeneous spatial scales or behavioural traits and iii) probes the information theoretic limits of real-time surveillance strategies.
