Biography

Kyaice Hendricks is a PhD student in the Department of War Studies, funded by the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS-DTP). Her doctoral project is conducted in collaboration with the History Museum of Bosnia and Hercegovina (HMBiH) and examines its role in the curation and memorialisation of child loss in the aftermath of the 1992-96 war.

Prior to beginning her PhD, Kyaice completed a BA in English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and an MA in Comparative Literature at KCL, where she was awarded the David Rick’s MA Prize in Comparative Literature.

Her research focuses on the movement of memory between families, artistic practitioners, and cultural institutions, with particular interest in how absence, silence, and generational rupture shape the ethics of memorialisation.

Title: The History Museum of Bosnia and Hercegovina’s role in the strategic curation and memorialisation of child loss (working title)

Abstract: This research examines how the History Museum of Bosnia and Hercegovina curates and memorialises child loss during the 1992-96 war. It asks how narratives of grief, absence and disrupted generational memory are mediated within public and institutional settings. Using family accounts, artistic responses, and the Museum’s exhibition practices as connected points of analysis, it traces how different forms of child loss—prenatal loss, the killing of children, and evacuation—move from intimate experience into public representation. Ultimately, it seeks to understand how memorialisation operates in the absence of the next generation, and what this means for cultural memory, identity, and the afterlife of family narratives.
