Biography
Salman is an experienced academic in institutional sociology and political economy, with a strong interdisciplinary research portfolio in gender, governance, affect theory, borderland studies, conflict and post-conflict development, and the informal economy.
He has a proven track record of teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a growing publication record and experience in research leadership, academic service, and collaborative knowledge production. Salman's research sits at the intersection of development and cultural geography with a special interest in emotional geographies, public spaces and gender, institutional analysis and development, peace and violence, and Borderland studies.

Salman was a principal investigator on conflict, displacement, and economic revival in Pakistan in 2019 (funded by the US institute of Peace). He was a postdoctoral researcher on British Academy project “Mapping the wounded landscape of Swat valley: from Taliban’s violence and iconoclasm to social growth and reconciliation". In 2023-24 Salman was a principal investigator on “Geopolitics from below: affect and social science in Pakistan” funded by the US Institute of Peace.
As a principal investigator, Salman is currently developing two projects: affective materiality of Border governance in Pakistan and Afghanistan; and social accountability and climate governance in Pakistan. He is currently co-editing a special issue on the role of civil society in the economy in the Forum for Social Economics. Salman is also editing a multilingual anthology on relational peace, violence, and emotions in Pakistan. He is an associate editor at the Forum for Social Economics.
