Senior Technician (Workshop and Makerspace)

Biography

Naing Lin Oo manages the departmental makerspace, supporting research, teaching and technical innovation within the Department of Geography.

Naing designs, prototypes and develops bespoke environmental monitoring systems and research instrumentation using embedded technologies, including Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi. He creates low-cost, robust environmental sensing solutions integrating water quality, meteorological, atmospheric, and geospatial sensors for field research.

He designs and implements IoT telemetry systems using cellular, LoRa and satellite communications for real-time environmental monitoring, while also leading the fabrication, testing, calibration, deployment and long-term maintenance of environmental sensor systems operating in challenging field environments worldwide.

Naing further provides technical expertise throughout the research lifecycle - from concept development and rapid prototyping to field deployment and data acquisition. He supports international research projects by developing custom instrumentation for environmental monitoring in the UK, Kenya and other global locations.

He also delivers technical support and practical training for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, mentoring students, researchers and volunteers in engineering design, prototyping, digital fabrication and environmental monitoring technologies. 

Naing collaborates with multidisciplinary research teams to develop innovative solutions for environmental monitoring, citizen science and capacity building.
