
Dr Nitin Kapadia

Biography
Dr. Nitin Kapadia is a Lecturer in the Physical Sciences of Life at the Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics. His lab is interested in how cells process information using biochemical networks and do so reliably to execute functions in a reproducible manner. The model system used is cell cycle control, and understanding how cells execute cellular transitions at the right time, size, and space in the cell, and do so in an irreversible manner. His lab combines in vivo single molecule techniques, biophysics, mathematical modelling, single-cell biosensors to probe enzyme activity, advanced quantitative microscopy, and genetics.
Prior to joining King’s, he completed his postdoc with Sir Paul Nurse at the Francis Crick Institute, as an EMBO and HFSP postdoctoral fellow. He developed new biosensors of cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) activity in the nucleus and cytoplasm to understand how CDK orchestrates the onset of mitosis, including revealing where CDK is activated first, how activity is propagated throughout the cell, and how it is an irreversible transition. He then shifted his focus on understanding how CDK is robustly regulated to ensure cells trigger the onset of mitosis at a precise size and time.
Nitin completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto (UofT) in Canada, with a double major in physics and microbiology. He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at UofT, building custom microscopes including a light sheet microscope to study embryonic development. He completed his PhD at McGill University with Professor Rodrigo Reyes-Lamothe, using in vivo single-molecule tracking, machine learning, and computational approaches, to understand the dynamics and stability of the DNA replication machinery in live bacteria and yeast.
