Biography

Paulo Mattos lives in London, UK. He is a Visiting Research Fellow of the Transnational Law Institute at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London.

He is also a Permanent Member of the Brazilian Centre for Analysis and Planning - CEBRAP, São Paulo, Brazil, a leading research centre and think-tank.

After earning a L.LB. in law from University of São Paulo, Mattos received a Brazilian Ministry of Education (CAPES) Scholarship to do a social science research-training program at CEBRAP. After the CEBRAP’s training program, he received a State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Scholarship to do a Ph.D. program at University of São Paulo Law School. During the Ph.D. program he received a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research at Yale Law School, where he did a Visiting Scholar Program in 2003. Mattos was awarded a Ph.D. in Law from University of São Paulo in 2004. He worked in the project of creation of the Getulio Vargas Foundation Schools of Law (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) and has been very active in the debate about legal education and sociology of law and sociology of the economy applied research.

He is a former part-time professor at Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), where he taught for ten years law and economics both at São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro Schools of Law and was Head of the São Paulo Law School’s applied research and publications department. Besides his academic work, Mattos is Co-Founder of IG4 Capital, a private equity firm focused on turnarounds and sustainable investments in emerging markets. He is also a venture capitalist through Capital Lab Ventures and AKHA Ventures, two innovative investment platforms focused on deep technology and sustainable investments. Previously, Mattos was Managing Director and Head of Infrastructure and Telecommunications investments at GP Investments, a leading investment company in Latin America. He is also former Director, Member of the Credit and Investment Committee, and Head of the Management Committee at The Brazilian Development Bank – BNDES.

Research interests

Paulo Mattos research interests are in the fields of sociology of law, sociology of the economy, law and economic development, economic and ESG regulation, financial and capital markets regulation, and industrial policy. He has written articles on state reforms, regulatory reforms, industrial policy, ESG transnational regulation and financial and capital markets regulation and risk analysis.
