Biography
I was born in Peru and grew up in South and Central America, before moving to the United States at 19. I studied mathematics (major), philosophy (major), and physics (minor) as an undergraduate at The Johns Hopkins University and wrote a BA thesis (Philosophy) supervised by Yitzhak Melamed. I received an MA (Philosophy) from Hopkins in 2017, an MPhil (Philosophy) from Yale University in 2019, and a PhD (Philosophy) from Yale in 2022, My doctoral dissertation was on Spinoza's account of scientific explanation and was supervised by Michael Della Rocca. Before coming to King's, I held appointments at Mount Holyoke College and Texas A&M University.
My research comprises three main topics: various aspects of the philosophy of Spinoza; the history and philosophy of science (particularly the development of both experimentalism and classical mechanics in the 17th and 18th centuries); and contemporary metaphysics (particularly so-called "metaphysical rationalism"). I have additional research interests in general philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, and the historiography of early modern philosophy.
Research interests and PhD supervision
- Spinoza (especially his philosophy of science and of religion) and other early modern philosophers (especially Leibniz, Reid, and Du Chatelet)
- History and philosophy of science (especially the development of experimentalism in 17th century England and Newton's development of the concepts of Principia)
- Contemporary metaphysics (especially the principle of sufficient reason and various kinds of monism)
- Philosophy of science (especially realism and anti-realism)
- Philosophy of physics (esp. the relation between non-relativistic quantum mechanics and electrodynamics)
Teaching
