Dr Steven Wambua

Research Fellow in Health Data Science

Biography

Steven is a Research Fellow in Health Data Science within the Department of AI in Preventive Medicine, specialising in the analysis of electronic health records (EHRs) and the development of risk prediction and multistate models. He completed his PhD at the University of Birmingham through the BHF Data Science centre and HDR UK–Turing Wellcome PhD Programme, where his research focused on predicting and modelling the progression of cardiometabolic-renal conditions in women following pregnancy.

His doctoral work combined multistate modelling, risk prediction, and large-scale EHR data to inform equitable and patient-centred healthcare. Steven’s interest in health data research began with a Postgraduate Diploma studentship in Health Research Methods at the KEMRI–Wellcome Trust Research Programme, where he studied causal relationships using Mendelian Randomization. He later pursued an MSc in Biostatistics at the University of Nairobi, focusing on missing data and multilevel modelling of routine health records in his master’s project.

At KEMRI–Wellcome Trust, he also worked as a Statistician, applying time-series methods to model hospital data. His research interests include causal inference, multistate modelling, and AI-driven methods for survival analysis, with a focus on maternal and population health.

Outside of work, Steven enjoys cycling, swimming, and hiking.
