Wiaam Al-Hasani is a Clinical Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London. She is also a Consultant in Metabolic Medicine and Chemical Pathology at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where she works within the National Acute Porphyria Service.

She completed her higher specialist training in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine across the King’s Health Partners institutions and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.

Wiaam’s research lies at the intersection of metabolic medicine and psychiatry. She is particularly interested in understanding the biological links between metabolic dysfunction and severe mental illness, including insulin resistance, pancreatic dopamine signalling, synaptic dysfunction and lipid metabolism. Her research also explores approaches to improving cardiovascular risk assessment and cardiometabolic care for people living with severe mental illness.

In September 2024, Wiaam joined Professor Oliver Howes’ Psychosis Studies group through a King’s Health Partners Clinical Research Excellence Fellowship. She subsequently became a Clinical Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry within Dr Toby Pillinger’s research group. Her work combines clinical research, molecular imaging, evidence synthesis and translational metabolic medicine.

Her long-term aim is to develop integrated clinical and research approaches that improve both physical and mental health outcomes for people with severe mental illness.

Outside medicine and research, Wiaam enjoys baking and cooking and has a particular interest in the chemistry of food.
