Course Overview
Illness has widespread consequences, affecting not only the patient but, directly or indirectly, the whole of society. This module will consider the relationships between illness and public health, health determinants, patients’ perceptions, genetics, personalised medicine and what the multiple current evidence are that can reduce the level of impact illness has on the patient, their family and communities. The effects of global illness and how significant population health issues such as pandemics, obesity and other prevalent problems such as ischemic heart disease and drug abuse, affect populations, health provisions and society, in general, will also be considered.

- Demonstrate the effects widespread health issues have on society as a whole
- Demonstrate the need to account for individual circumstances when planning and evaluating care on an individual and social level
Learning outcomes
- Be able to evaluate the effect the individual illness has on family and society
- Critically analyse the effect prevalent illnesses and diseases such as obesity, diabetes or pandemics may have on society
- Evaluate strategies that may help to elevate the health burden on society, such as personalised medicine, vaccination programmes and health promotion drives
