Course Overview

This module will support you to apply and evaluate knowledge gained safely and sensitively to underpin decision-making and care-giving in relation to care of neonates who require intensive care support (ventilation, inotropes, cooling, surgery, sepsis, end of life care). You will be supported to apply and evaluate clinical skills gained safely and effectively, to promote the wellbeing of the neonate and to provide and evaluate family-centred care within the intensive care unit. Underpinning physiology and pathophysiology will be explored in order to build a sound knowledge base.

Entry Requirements

Qualified nurses who have undertaken neonatal special care, neonatal high dependency or equivalent or who can demonstrate attainment of the knowledge and skills. Staff who work in a level 1 (SCBU) or level 2 (LNU) should gain experience in a NICU – this must be negotiated with trust managers prior to the start of the module and allow for completion of the competency assessment document.
