Course Overview

This module aims to develop nurses’ knowledge and skills in the specialist field of neuroscience nursing. The theoretical and empirical knowledge that underpins the practice of neuroscience nursing will be explored and critical decision-making skills in the planning and delivery of care will be promoted. The knowledge and skills learned on the module will enable the provision of evidence-based care to people with neurological conditions in a wide variety of settings including primary care, neurosurgery, neurology, critical care and rehabilitation.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course you will be able to:

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the pathophysiology of neurological conditions
Critically evaluate nursing research to promote evidence-based practice
Demonstrate proficiency in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care for individuals with neurological conditions or post neurological trauma
Critically evaluate treatments for patients with neurological conditions
Develop critical reasoning and advanced knowledge to enhance decision-making in clinical practice
Develop a person-centred approach through exploration and reflection on psychological and social aspects of care
Appraise local, national health promotion strategies and evaluate the factors which influence the health care of patients with neurological problems
Critically evaluate the evolving role of the neuroscience nurse within multi-disciplinary care provision.
Critically examine the professional, ethical and legal issues related to the management of neuroscience patients.
