Course Overview

This module is run in partnership with St Christopher's Hospice. It provides an examination of the philosophy and principles of palliative or end of life care as applied in all care settings. It aims to equip nurses with the skills to complete an initial and ongoing assessment of the needs of a patient requiring palliative care, with regard to their physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural well-being. It will also explore and analyse the needs of the 'family' and the role of the nurse and multi-professional team in meeting these needs.

Course features

These skills will be developed through evaluation of current recommended best practice as presented in research, evidence-based and policy documents. A major emphasis of the course will be on developing skills required to learn from practice and with continuing professional self-awareness. Students will use a workbook to guide their reflection on their own practice and that of their workplace. They will be required to analyse and evaluate interventions with patients, looking critically at strengths as well as weaknesses of practice and to reflect on feedback from users, carers, and colleagues on the effectiveness of interventions.
