Course features

This short course includes:

  • A short online module to be completed before attending an in-person training. The online module can be completed at your own time and at your own pace.
  • Two in-person training sessions at King's Waterloo campus. This will be an interactive session within a small group, with video demonstrations, discussions, and role-play. The training session will take place in the evenings and available dates are listed above.
  • Self-directed reflective practice.

Course content

This course will provide an evidence-based grounding in the extent of nonadherence, patient and clinician factors that contribute to it and strategies to address it.

Attendees will:

  • Develop their understanding of nonadherence to treatment and the impacts on patient health and healthcare systems
  • Learn about behavioural science relevant to adherence to treatment
  • Will be introduced to, and practice using, tools to identify patients at risk of nonadherence
  • Will develop skills in key behaviour change techniques relevant to nonadherence
  • Explore how these techniques could be used to address issues within their current practice

We aim to develop clinician confidence and competence in identifying and addressing nonadherence. Enabling them to coach their own patients to problem-solve and find solutions.

Learning outcomes

After attending this module it is intended that trainees will be able to:

  • Describe the extent, impact, and causes of nonadherence
  • Use a screening tool to identify patients at risk of non-adherence
  • Select and deliver one of five adherence support strategies
  • Recognise potential hurdles to identifying and addressing adherence support within their own practice and explore solutions to overcome these.
