ACCESSCare-B: Bereavement
ACCESSCare-B examines the bereavement outcomes and experiences of both LGB (lesbian, gay, or bisexual) and heterosexual individuals.
We conducted a survey of bereaved individuals in England and Wales whose partner or spouse had recently died. Our goal was to explore differences between those in same-gender and different-gender partnerships. In total, 233 same-gender partners and 329 different-gender partners participated.
We also conducted 21 qualitative interviews with bereaved LGBT+ people. We asked about their experience of the illness, and their involvement in their partner’s care. We wanted to understand their partner’s death and funeral, and the support they had before and after bereavement. We asked about their preferences in disclosing their relationships, sexual orientation and gender identity. Finally, we wanted to know about any recommendations they had for professional practice.
These studies provided us with a deeper understanding of the experiences of bereaved LGBT+ individuals, including additional challenges to accessing vital bereavement support.
We used these findings to develop 5 evidence-based recommendations to support inclusive care of LGBT+ people facing bereavement.
Aims
Survey aim: To understand whether there are differences in bereavement needs and outcomes between same and different gender partners.
Qualitative study aim: To investigate LGBT+ specific experiences of partner bereavement, and examine decision-making processes in relation to disclosure of relationships and identities.
