Understanding governance challenges in complex societies

The Centre for the Study of Governance & Society (CSGS) explores how formal and informal rules of governance shape the way societies flourish or become vulnerable.

The Centre investigates questions about social and political power. With a focus on comparative research, CSGS's activities evaluate how different governance models perform in complex, real-world conditions.

Research areas

CSGS’s research is currently focused on the following themes:

1. Market economies and green ideals

  • Exploring the relationship between different models of market economies with environmental and sustainability goals.

2. Liberal political economy in Asia Pacific

  • Targeting the gap between classic Western liberal theory and local governance realities.

3. Political economy of knowledge and ignorance

  • Investigating how institutions shape the production and dissemination of knowledge about socio-economic problems.

4. The King’s world-wide partnership grant

  • Examining how global governance and markets respond to citizens’ needs in complex societies.

Activities

CSGS hosts regular research seminars, academic conferences and book events which are open to both policy-makes and the public.
