Dementia Journeys

Dementia Journeys originated from the six-year EMBED-Care programme, a collaboration between King’s College London and UCL, funded by ESRC and NIHR.

Our 2024 Dementia Journeys exhibition at Science Gallery London spotlighted unpaid carers' personal accounts through art, storytelling, and interactive media. Dementia Journeys now thrives in digital and print forms. The Dementia Journeys website and accompanying newspaper bring together creative expressions - artworks, poetry and an animated film - alongside research findings and ways for the public to get involved in improving dementia care, including direct advocacy activities.

A dedicated resources area provides practical materials such as guidance on involving patients and the public, ethical considerations, case examples, evaluation approaches, and toolkits designed to support high-quality, compassionate dementia care.

By merging heartfelt narratives with practical, research-informed materials, Dementia Journeys now stands as a multifaceted resource: educating and engaging the public, empowering researchers and practitioners, and advocating for better end-of-life dementia care across policy, community, and clinical domains.

Aims

Through the Dementia Journeys newspaper and website, the project raises public awareness, shares lived experiences and promotes compassionate care. The research will inform policy, guide clinical practice, and empower families and professionals to better support people with dementia.

By bridging research and public engagement, Dementia Journeys aims to create lasting change in how dementia care is understood and delivered across health and social care systems.
