The Military Innovation Network (MIN) is an international research group based at the School of Security Studies at King’s College London.

MIN is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research and fostering dialogue on military and defence innovation across academia, government, the armed forces, and industry. At the heart of MIN is a commitment to impactful, multidisciplinary research that addresses the most pressing challenges shaping the future of defence and security.

Our work

The network serves as a leading platform for connecting scholars, policymakers, military professionals, and industry experts, facilitating collaboration across institutional and national boundaries.

MIN hosts a dynamic programme of seminars, talks, workshops, and international events that bring together established experts and emerging voices in the field.

The Military Innovation Network also actively supports postgraduate researchers, early-career scholars, senior academics, and practitioners through opportunities to present their work, build professional networks, and publish.

Research

Our research spans a wide range of critical topics within the field of Military Innovation Studies or Military Change broadly speaking, such as:

• Emerging disruptive technologies (artificial intelligence, drone warfare, advanced materials, precision strike systems, etc)
• Military innovation across all domains (land, maritime, air and space, cyber and electromagnetic) in wartime and peacetime
• Strategic adaptation and innovation
• Military adaptation, operational and tactical innovation
• Defence innovation, innovation ecosystems, and capability development
• Doctrinal innovation and change
• Organisational innovation and change
• Professional military education

Our partners

MIN is built on partnerships and international collaboration. The network is currently based at King’s College London and developed in partnership with the Swedish Defence University (FHS). FHS researchers contribute to MIN’s development and operations and support our international events.

The Military Innovation also collaborates with other higher education institutions, international organisations, the defence sector, and professional military education institutions worldwide. An important mention is the Brazilian Army Command & Staff College (ECEME) with whom MIN held joint workshops, publications, and talks.

Overall, our partnerships and collaborations span from closed-door workshops and capacity-building activities to joint research.

Recurring events

The Network operates at different levels. Within King’s College London and partner universities, MIN hosts the Military Innovation Reading Group, where students discuss the state of the art in the field, and the Incubation Seminar Series, where students present their work to faculty and peers.

At the external face, MIN offers the biennial Postgraduate and Early Career Workshop on Defence & Military Innovation (formally known as PGR/ECR workshop), where postgraduate researcher, civilian or military, can present their work, have it discussed by faculty members from the School of Security Studies and invited universities. The Workshop also offers networking opportunities, industry-sponsored panels and fireside chats with relevant practitioners. These events are held in the United Kingdom.

The Military Innovation Network also organises the biennial Military Innovation Studies Summit (MISS), an international networking event that connects practitioners and senior scholars with researchers worldwide. These events are held in Sweden.

MIN also puts together the regular Innovation Talks series. These are one-off events with relevant scholars and practitioners, delivered online, in person, or in a hybrid format. In the past, events were held with participants from multiple universities across the UK and beyond.
