Phytochemicals are plant secondary metabolites. Currently, more than 10000 different types of phytochemicals have been identified, and many still remain unknown. Main classes include polyphenols, carotenoids, glucosinolates, alkaloids, phytosterols, and terpenoid).  Evidence from epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials suggest that phytochemicals may be protective against chronic diseases in particular cardiometabolic diseases. Our department has a strong focus on investigating the health benefits of phytochemicals. and particularly understanding the bioavailability, metabolism and cardiometabolic  health benefits of dietary polyphenols. We have conducted many human dietary intervention studies investigating the effects of polyphenols and other phytochemicals such as betalains on cardiometabolic health, and more recently, on cognition and mental health.
