Accessibility Statement for Student Records

Currently this statement applies to the Graduation Ceremony Registration, Enrolment, Self Service, and the Right to Study Form.

Using the website

We want as many people as possible to be able to use, read and understand the content of Student Records.

This means that you should be able to:

  • View content up to 300% zoom without the text overlapping for most content
  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • Use major screen readers such as JAWS over Chrome, and Voiceover over Safari
  • Use a range of devices to access Student Records e.g. mobile phone or laptop

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of Student Records are not fully accessible. For example:

  • There are interactive elements that receive keyboard focus, but which cannot be activated with a keyboard, as well as anchor tags without href attributes that do not receive focus when tabbing through the page (“x” button links). As a result, they cannot be operated using a keyboard.
  • Informative images lack meaningful alternative text, and, in some cases, have no alternative text or attributes.
  • Some headings are not appropriately identified, which may lead to content that seems unstructured or disorganised.
  • There are form fields that are not associated with their visual labels, with additional information that is necessary to understand or complete the form fields, or with error messages that are visually pinned to the fields. The state of the form fields may be unclear to users.
  • Some links are visually communicated as being links through colour alone, without an additional visual cue. Additionally, the colour ratio difference between the text and links do not meet colour contrast requirements.
  • There are interactive elements which receive keyboard focus, but the only visual cue provided relies entirely on colour. Additionally, the colour ratio difference between the contrast ratio between the focused and unfocussed colours do not meet colour contrast requirements.
  • Some elements do not meet the contrast ratio, which means that users might struggle to perceive content that fails the colour contrast requirement. This includes regular text, link text, as well as button text.
  • Custom focus indicators, such as outlines, do not meet colour contrast requirements.
  • Custom elements, such as custom input fields and checkboxes, do not meet colour contrast requirements.
  • There are instances where focus navigates onto the same component multiple times, and off-screen interactive elements that receive focus. This may particularly disadvantage keyboard users who often navigate by tabbing through the interactive elements.
  • There are error messages that appear on the page with no programmatic call-to-action. As a result, assistive technology will not automatically announce the presence of error messages.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

King’s College London is committed to making this website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

Student Records is provided by a third party supplier which means that some aspects of accessibility are outside our immediate control.

The content listed below is not accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some areas of the website do not meet accessibility requirements. They are listed below by WCAG criteria reference.

We plan to rectify the accessibility issues by September 2026. When we publish new content, we’ll make sure that it meets accessibility standards.

1.1.1: Non-text content

  • Some non-text content does not have a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose, including:
    • Informative images lacking meaningful text alternatives
    • Decorative images not being hidden from assistive technology

1.3.1: Info and Relationships

  • Several elements require correct coding to reinforce relationships and information conveyed through the presentation. Content may otherwise seem unstructured, disorganized, or not available to assistive technology users. This includes:
    • Elements that title or categorise other content have not been marked up semantically
    • Text uses heading semantics inappropriately4
    • Radio group not associated with their visual group label
    • Presentational table exposed to assistive technology
    • Form error messages are not programmatically associated with respective fields
    • Form fields not programmatically associated with respective visual labels
    • Additional information is not associated with respective form fields

1.4.1: Use of Color

  • Colour relied upon to communicate information:
    • Links indicated using colour alone
    • Focus indicated using colour alone

1.4.3: Contrast (Minimum)

  • Several elements do not pass colour contrast requirements, including:
    • Regular text that does not meet the contrast ratio
    • Regular link text that does not meet the contrast ratio
    • Regular button text that does not meet the contrast ratio

1.4.5: Images of Text

  • Image contains embedded text that is not available in plain text (Student Records image)

1.4.10: Reflow

  • When the screen size is 320 x 256px and 100% zoom, or 1280 x 1024px and 400% zoom, content was presented with loss of information or functionality, and required two-dimensional scroll

1.4.11: Non-text Contrast

  • Several elements do not pass colour contrast requirements, including:
    • Custom focus indication does not meet the contrast ratio
    • Custom interactive element boundary does not meet the contrast ratio

2.1.1: Keyboard

  • For the most part, functionality of the content is operable through a keyboard interface, except for:
    • Some anchor tags without href attributes that do not receive focus when tabbing through the page
    • Some interactive elements that receive keyboard focus, but which cannot be activated with a keyboard

2.4.3: Focus Order

  • For the most part, the website can be navigated sequentially, except for:
    • Some off-screen interactive elements that receive focus
    • Some instances where focus navigates onto the same component multiple times

3.3.1: Error Identification

  • There are error messages that appear on the page with no programmatic call-to-action, for example:
    • Keyboard focus is not moved and there is not a live region. In this case, the errors appear dynamically when the page is submitted

3.3.2: Labels or Instructions

  • For most fields, labels or instructions were provided when content required user input, except for:
    • Elements that identify themselves as required with an asterisk symbol. However, the meaning of the symbol is not explained

4.1.2: Name, Role, Value

  • There are interactive elements that do not have an accessible name
  • There are interactive elements that have inappropriate accessible names
  • There are expandable elements that are not programmatically determined as such
  • There are anchor tags with no `href` attribute, which means that they are technically not determined as links because the HTML specification determines them as being placeholder elements
  • There are comboboxes that are not correctly programmatically determined, for example:
    • Missing or malformed ARIA on editable combobox (with autocomplete)

Disproportionate burden

At this time, we have not made any disproportionate burden claims.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services, for example, PDFs with information about offers received and other information on how to access our 6services. However, they do not meet accessibility requirements - for example, they may not be structured so they’re accessible to a screen reader. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value).

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

King’s College London is committed to fixing or providing alternatives for all issues that we are made aware of or are identified by our internal testing and auditing processes.

Activities to improve the accessibility of the website are as follows:

  • We’re working with partners to ensure that the development of the Student Records digital platform is accessible
  • Ensuring that new content published is tested to ensure it is compliant
