Università degli Studi di Bologna

About the Institution

The Università degli Studi di Bologna is believed to have been founded in 1088. The university received a charter from Frederick I Barbarossa in 1158, but in the 19th century a committee of historians led by Giosuè Carducci traced the founding of the University back to 1088, which would make it the oldest university in the world. The university is historically notable for its teaching of canon and civil law and today has approximately 100,000 students across its 23 schools. It is a member of the Coimbra Group and provides the name to the Bologna Process, the creation of the European Higher Education Area by making academic degree standards and quality assurance standards more comparable and compatible throughout Europe.
