The purpose of a personal statement is to outline your academic background and relevant experience, skills, and achievements to demonstrate that you are a suitable candidate for the programme you are applying to.

Assessors will seek to understand your motivation for applying to the programme, whether you are a good match for the programme you have applied for, and that you have the necessary experience and skills to complete the degree programme.

A personal statement usually:

• is between 500 and 1,000 words long
• demonstrates why you are interested in studying at King’s College London
• demonstrates why you are interested in studying at your academic department
• demonstrates why you are applying to this specific programme
• outlines how your previous study is relevant to this programme
• demonstrates your relevant educational achievements
• evidences your research skills and transferable skills
• makes reference to any other relevant experience or training, for example training, qualifications, and volunteering or work experience
• outlines how your doctoral degree supports your future career plans.
