Careers

Employability

The academic foundation from this programme can support careers in mental health as a clinician, policy maker, researcher, or educator. Please note: this programme is not a clinical training in psychotherapy.

Possible career options after completion of the MSc. are the following ones:

  • Continue into clinical or academic training (e.g. Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or PhD)
  • Work in academic, clinical, social, educational or pharmaceutical settings
  • Apply to professional psychotherapy training programmes

Please note that there are additional prerequisites for applying for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and for psychotherapy training programmes.

Pathways to psychotherapy training

At present, we have a collaboration with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, a British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) Member Institution:

  • Our MSc is a foundation course for the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (M58) training
  • M58 is a minimum 4-year clinical training towards qualification in Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
  • Admission requires an interview to assess suitability for the training, supported by a reference letter from our MSc

We also have a collaboration with the University of Essex for their MA in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, a BACP accredited course:

  • Our MSc is recognised as a foundation year for this MA programme
  • The MA in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy is a 3-year clinical training towards qualification as a Psychodynamic Counsellor
  • An interview and a reference letter from our MSc are part of the admissions process

From this course, trainees may qualify and practice as a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Future developments

We are working with the BPC Registrar and additional BPC Member Institutions to develop additional training collaborations.

After qualifying from a professional training course, therapists can go on to work in:

  • NHS mental health services
  • Social care and third sector organisations
  • Private or independent clinical practice
