Standard requirements

A minimum 2:1 undergraduate Bachelor’s (honours) degree

If you have a lower degree classification, or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Masters or PGDip).

Programme specific requirements

2:1 undergraduate honours degree in film studies or a subject in which film or media plays a significant part (candidates from other disciplines may be considered)

In order to meet the academic entry requirements for this programme you should have a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree with a final mark of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme. If you are still studying you should be achieving an average of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme.

Selection Process

Applications must be made online using King's Apply, the Admissions Portal. A non-refundable application fee of £85 applies.

Applications are usually assessed by at least two academics; in addition to a completed application form we also ask for a piece of written work of at least 4,000 words.

We aim to process all applications within four weeks although this may take longer in February and March, and over holiday periods.

Personal statement and supporting information

You will be asked to submit the following documents in order for your application to be considered:

Personal Statement	Yes	A personal statement is required. This can be entered directly into the online application form (maximum 4,000 characters) or uploaded as an attachment to the online application form (maximum 2 pages). Please tell us briefly why you want to undertake the MA in Film Studies, and what you are hoping to do afterwards. Applicants to the Film and Philosophy pathway should indicate this in the first line of the personal statement. Provisional pathway selection will then be provided as part of any offer, to be confirmed upon enrolment.
Previous Academic Study	Yes	A copy (or copies) of your official academic transcript(s), showing the subjects studied and marks obtained. If you have already completed your degree, copies of your official degree certificate will also be required. Applicants with academic documents issued in a language other than English, will need to submit both the original and official translation of their documents.
References	Yes	One academic reference is required. A professional reference will be accepted if you have completed your qualifications over five years ago. In some cases, we may request an additional reference from you.
Writing Sample	Yes	You must also provide a piece of written work of approximately 3000-4000 words on a relevant topic. If you have been away from study and are unable to submit a previous piece of work, you will need to write a new essay. What we are looking for is evidence of your ability to research a topic and write about film in a theoretically informed way. You can write about any topic and any film or group of films you like. We are looking for an ability to perform close analysis of films, and their production, circulation and reception circumstances. We expect your essay to be informed by and refer to academic writing on your chosen topic.
