Teaching methods - what to expect
We use lectures, seminars and group tutorials to deliver the modules on the course. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study. The total contact time for each 15-credit taught module is 32 hours. These sessions will include lectures, teacher-led and student-led group discussions based on key areas of study.
Each 15-credit taught module requires on average:
25 hours pre-course preparation, 40 hours writing assignments and doing the short answer examinations, and 15 hours preparing for an MCQ exam.
Throughout the year, you can expect to receive approximately 80 hours of tutorials, plus supervision of dissertation research and ad hoc academic tutor meetings. Students could spend 200 to 300 hours researching and writing a dissertation.
Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
Assessment
- Coursework
- Written/practical examinations
Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include written essays and presentations. Coursework typically contributes to 50% and examinations 50% to your final mark.
