This Theatre, Performance and Critical Culture MA allows you to study at the heart of London’s Theatreland and enhance your classroom education with a wealth of field trips. You’ll be introduced to various theatre and performance practices, from contemporary theatres and live art performances to avant-garde dramas and political interventions; site-specific events, choreographies and compositions; and the world of cultural tourism and West End spectacles. During this master’s in Theatre, Performance and Critical Culture, you’ll explore the impact of society, both specific to theatre histories and ongoing wider political agency, focusing on movements such as Black Lives Matter, MeToo and the climate emergency. You’ll also get to shape your curriculum with optional modules, including the performance-research-based Performance Lab in the specially restored Anatomy Museum & Theatre theatre complex on the Strand.
Graduates from this Theatre, Performance and Critical Culture MA have worked in the arts and other related industries, including museums, curatorial, archival work, production, dramaturgy, journalism, performance and theatre and performance-related arts management and administration. Others choose to continue their research in the field further at a doctoral level—one recent graduate is working on the history of ‘early feminist writing for lunch-time theatre in 1970s London’ with Arts and Humanities Research Council Funding at Cambridge University.
