Clinical skills simulation

We know that everyone learns in a different way. That’s why we prioritise student-centred learning. We want you to have a rich, exciting and engaging experience that reflects the rewarding career you can have after graduation.

You’ll learn from experienced practitioners and expert researchers throughout your time with us. Enjoy a mix of face-to-face sessions, simulation training and virtual teaching. We adapt our methods to the topic you’ll be studying and encourage you to develop your own skills and reflect on your experience.

The way we teach is constantly evolving to include more simulation training. We also use actors to help you build on your skills in an environment that reflects real-life scenarios.

You will spend about 20% of your time in scheduled teaching, 30% in guided independent study, and 50% of your time on placement. One credit is usually around 10 hours of work.

Clinical Placements

Around half of the course is spent on clinical placements with our partner healthcare providers. These include some of London’s leading NHS Trusts, as well as private and voluntary organisations covering a range of specialist areas related to your studies.

You’ll work shift patterns like the qualified nurses at your placement, which may include weekends and bank holidays.

We often hear from employers how capable and confident King’s nursing students are in the workplace. Many students get job offers from their placement providers and choose to start their new roles as soon as they graduate.

Summer Vacation

During the first two years of the programme, your summer vacation will fall into one of two waves – either June/July or July/August. One wave will be your vacation, one will be a placement.

You can tell us your preference, but we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to meet this. That means it’s best not to make any commitments until you’ve found out the timings for your placement.

Assessment

  • Coursework
  • Practical Examinations
  • Written Examinations

To assess your progress, we use a mixture of coursework (around 60% of your final mark), written and practical exams (40%). Coursework includes essays and case studies. Exams could be multiple-choice questions or a practical exam such as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). You will also complete the Nursing Practice Assessment Document (PAD) to record your proficiency while on placement.
