When do I nominate examiners

Supervisors are required to provide examiner nominations on the RD1 - examination entry form, these should be fully completed with all the required information.

Supervisors should informally obtain agreement from the examiners before they are nominated

Please note: any incomplete forms will not be accepted by the Research Degrees team, therefore please complete them fully to avoid delays.

What is a SAB

A Subject Area Board (SAB) is a group of subject specialists within King’s College London who are tasked with initial consideration of examiner nominations to ascertain if the examiners nominated are appropriate to put before the Research Degrees Examination Board.

Please see information on Subject Area Boards below:

When will I be told if the examiner nominations are successful

Once the SAB and the Chair of the Research Degrees Examination Board have approved the examiners, the Research Degrees team will confirm this approval to the examiners via email. The supervisor and student are copied into the email.

Please note: that due to the large number of RD1 forms that we recieve it may take a couple of months from the submission of the RD1 form before examiners are approved and appointed.

When can I arrange the oral examination

The oral examination should only be arranged once the Research Degrees team have dispatched the students thesis. The supervisor and student are copied into the dispatch email

When should the oral examination take place

The oral examination should take place within 3 months of the thesis being dispatched.

Where should the oral examination be held

As per the Academic Regulations the oral examination should be held in London and in person unless alternative arrangements are exceptionally agreed by the Research Degrees Examination Board prior to the examination. Please send any requests to vary the location or nature (e.g. video conferences) to researchdegrees@kcl.ac.uk

Should I attend the oral examination

It is expected that this decision will be made in consultation with the student. The student specifies on the RD1 - examination entry form whether they would like their supervisor to attend.

Who should I confirm the date of the oral examination to

Please confirm the oral examination date to the Research Degrees team at researchdegrees@kcl.ac.uk It is imperative the date of the oral examination is confirmed to the team so that all follow up work can be implemented as soon as possible.

Can I approve corrections

As per the Academic Regulations supervisors are not permitted to check and approve amendments, this can only be done by the nominated examiner(s) as per the decision form.

Once the examiners are satisfied with the amendments, please make sure they email researchdegrees@kcl.ac.uk to confirm approval of the amendments. An email to the student or supervisor is not sufficient, they need to send a direct email to the Research Degrees team.

Any confirmation of approval emails received by the 24th of the month will be put forward to the Chair of the Research Degrees Examination Board for approval.

Can I claim expenses

No - only examiners can claim expenses they have incurred using the relevant form. The Research Degrees team do not reimburse supervisors or departments for any expenses.
