In this CPPR lunchtime seminar, Euan Auld discusses a paper which extends recent inquiries into the relationship between religion, data and global education policy, applying analytical tools from philosophy and theology to analyse the career trajectory of Sir Michael Barber; widely recognised as one of the most influential global actors in education.

The analysis involved an extensive review of sources that have been published by Sir Michael Barber and illuminates how apocalyptic symbolism has grown more pronounced as he scaled to become a global actor, culminating in his self-presentation as an intellectual prophet. The paper traces Barber’s transition from speculative faith to salvation through science (of delivery), which was formalised in the management doctrine of Deliverology® and which has spread as part of a wider shift towards New Global Management in education.
