Bibliology is the discipline that studies the book as an object, in its historical and technical aspects; it considers, in history, the materials with which it has been made, its type of binding, its calligraphy, typography and illustrations. It also analyses aspects such as the number of manuscript or printed copies at different times, their distribution and recipients, and the industrialization and marketing of the book.
This discipline has been practised in Mexico in various academic spaces over time. The Interdisciplinary Bibliology Seminar, SIB, was founded in June 2012 within UNAM's Institute of Bibliographic Research, becoming the first specialized space for bibliological research, and book and publishing studies.
We celebrate ten years of SIB with this cycle of lectures, by offering a general historical overview of some of the main themes in the history of bibliographic and bibliological culture in Mexico. The content is organised into themes within a wide temporal scope, distributed into four sections: 1. The Pre-Hispanic Period and the Encounter with Spain, 2. Printing in New Spain, 3. The Nineteenth Century, and 4. Printing in Mexico in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries. Leading historians, art historians, conservators and restorers, designers, typographers and scholars of Mexican literature have been invited to give the eleven talks.
With this cycle, we intend to divulge some of the work of bibliology, and book and publishing studies from Mexico to other academic spaces and latitudes.

2 May | "Writing Systems and Graphic Styles of Pre-Hispanic Codices"
Dra. Saeko Yanagisawa, SIB-IIB UNAM. Her lines of research revolve around the manuscripts of Mesoamerican pictographic tradition, focusing on stylistic and manufacturing analysis, as well as writing system. She is a member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar on Bibliology since November 2015.
3 May | "The Uses of Writing and Palaeography of Nahua Texts"
Dr. Mario Alberto Sánchez Aguilera, postdoc IIB UNAM. Lines of research: evangelization manuscripts in the Nahuatl language, "cultural contact", and written culture among the indigenous elites of the sixteenth century. Member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar on Bibliology since September 2020.
5 May | "Mexican Bookbinding in the 16th Century"
Dra. Martha Elena Romero Ramírez, IIB UNAM. Her lines of research are the history of bookbinding, especially in Mexico, book conservation and access to information. Founding Member since August 29, 2012, and member until June 2015. Deputy Coordinator from August 2012 to February 2015.

10 May | "Engravings in New Spain Printing"
Mtra. Beatriz Berndt León Mariscal, SIB-IIB UNAM. Independent researcher. An art historian specializing in the New Spain period, her recent research focuses on studying intaglio illustration in books and opuscula of the eighteenth century. Her field of interest includes the meaning, traditions and problems of visual representation within textual and material support, production contexts of production and consumption. Member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar of Bibliology since October 2015.

Adriana Gómez Llorente, BNM. Academic Technician at the Conservation and Restoration of the National Library of Mexico, BNM. She has a degree in Movable Property Restoration and a master's degree in Museology from the National School of Conservation, Restoration and Museography "Manuel del Castillo Negrete (ENCRyM).

16 May | "Printing Techniques and Image Reproduction in Nineteenth-Century Mexico"
Dr. Héctor Raúl Morales Mejía, FES-Cuauhtitlán UNAM. Associate Professor at the Department of Design and Visual Communication. His lines of research revolve around burin engraving from the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries (particularly the engravings of Dürer and his contemporaries), relief and intaglio printing processes, and the history of books and drawing. Member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar on Bibliology since August 10, 2017.
17 May | "Uses of Images in Periodical Publications in Nineteenth-Century Mexico"
Dra. María José Esparza Liberal, IIE y SIB-IIB UNAM. Researcher at the Institute of Aesthetic Research-UNAM. Her line of research focuses on nineteenth-century art, emphasising artistic productions outside the Academy, such as the presence of travelling artists and the development of lithography and popular engraving in Mexican prints. Member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar of Bibliology since October 11, 2013.
19 May | "The Production and Uses of Paper in Mexico from the Colonial Period to the Present)"
Mtra. Alejandra Odor Chávez, BNM. Associate Academic Technician at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the National Library of Mexico. She has a degree in Restoration of Movable Property from the National School of Conservation, Restoration and Museography "Manuel del Castillo Negrete" (ENCRyM-INAH).

23 May | "Contemporary Uses of Craft Printing"
Mtra. Zazilha Lotz Cruz García, UAEM y SIB-IIB UNAM. Full-time Professor at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, she is completing her doctorate in Arts and Design at UNAM's Faculty of Art and Design, FAD. Her interests and lines of research focus on editorial design and its production. Her doctoral research focuses on letterpress printing in Mexico in the twenty-first century, with which she intends to promote and enhance the practice of this ancient technique of graphic reproduction. Member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar on Bibliology since August 2018 .
24 May | "Digital Typography in Mexico"
Mtro. Cristóbal Henestrosa, FAD-UNAM and Dra. Marina Garone SIB-IIB UNAM. Cristóbal Henestrosa is a design graduate from UNAM and lecturer in typographic design at the Gestalt Studies Center. Since 2011 he teaches Typography and Design of Alphabets at UNAM's Faculty of Arts and Design. He has developed font families for clients such as the Fondo de Cultura Económica, Librerías Gandhi, and the Federal Government of Mexico. He has twice obtained the certificate of excellence in typographic design from the Type Directors Club of New York, the highest award in its category worldwide (Fund, 2008; Espinosa Nova, 2010).

La bibliología es la disciplina que estudia el libro como objeto, tanto en lo histórico como en lo técnico; considera, en la historia, los materiales con que ha sido confeccionado, su tipo de encuadernación, su caligrafía, tipografía e ilustraciones. Analiza, asimismo, aspectos como la cantidad de ejemplares manuscritos o impresos de diferentes épocas, su distribución y sus destinatarios, así como la industrialización y comercialización del libro.
Esta disciplina se ha practicado en México en diversos espacios académicos a lo largo del tiempo. En junio de 2012 se fundó en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM, el Seminario Interdisciplinario de Bibliología, SIB, dentro del Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas, IIB, y se convirtió en el primer espacio especializado para el desarrollo de investigaciones bibliológicas y de estudios del libro y la edición.
A diez años de la fundación de ese espacio universitario, con este ciclo de conferencias hemos querido ofrecer un panorama general e histórico de algunos de los principales temas de la historia de la cultura bibliográfica y bibliológica en México. El contenido está organizado en temas y problemas de una temporalidad amplia, distribuidos en cuatro secciones: 1. Periodo prehispánico y de contacto, 2. Periodo novohispano, 3. Siglo XIX, y 4. Siglos XX y XXI. Para impartir las once ponencias se ha invitado a destacados historiadores, historiadores del arte, conservadores y restauradores, diseñadores, tipógrafos y estudiosos de la literatura de México.
Con este ciclo queremos difundir una parte del trabajo de bibliología y estudios del libro y la edición de México a otros espacios académicos y a otras latitudes.

Mtra. Beatriz Berndt León Mariscal, SIB-IIB UNAM. Investigadora independiente. Historiadora del arte especializada en el periodo novohispano, su trabajo investigativo reciente se centra en el estudio de la ilustración calcográfica en libros y opúsculos del siglo XVIII. Su campo de interés comprende los significados, tradiciones y problemas de representación de la imagen en el soporte textual y material, así como sus contextos de producción y consumo. Dr. Héctor Raúl Morales Mejía, FES-Cuauhtitlán UNAM. Profesor Asociado de la FES Cuautitlán adscrito al Departamento de Diseño y Comunicación Visual. Sus líneas de investigación giran en torno al grabado al buril de los siglos XV al XVI (particularmente los grabados de Durero y sus contemporáneos), los procesos de impresión en relieve y en hueco, la historia del libro y el dibujo. Miembro del Seminario Interdisciplinario de Bibliología desde el 10 de agosto de 2017.

Dra. María José Esparza Liberal, IIE y SIB-IIB UNAM. Investigadora del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas-UNAM. Su línea de investigación se centra en el arte del siglo XIX en general, poniendo especial énfasis en las producciones artísticas al margen de la Academia, como la presencia de los artistas viajeros y el desarrollo de la litografía y el grabado popular en los impresos mexicanos. Es licenciada en Restauración de Bienes Muebles por la Escuela Nacional de Conservación, Restauración y Museografía "Manuel del Castillo Negrete" (ENCRyM-INAH).

Mtra. Zazilha Lotz Cruz García, UAEM y SIB-IIB UNAM. Profesora de Tiempo Completo, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos. Cursa el Doctorado en Artes y Diseño, de la Facultad de Artes y Diseño,FAD-UNAM. Sus intereses, trabajo y líneas de investigación giran en torno al diseño y la producción editorial. Su investigación doctoral trata sobre la impresión tipográfica en México en el siglo XXI, con lo cual pretende promover y enriquecer la práctica de esta técnica antigua de reproducción gráfica. Miembro del Seminario Interdisciplinario de Bibliología desde agosto de 2018.

Mtro. Cristóbal Henestrosa, FAD-UNAM y Marina Garone SIB-IIB UNAM. Cristóbal Henestrosa es diseñador por la UNAM y maestro en diseño tipográfico por el Centro de Estudios Gestalt, Desde 2011 imparte las asignaturas de Tipografía y Diseño de Alfabetos en la ahora Facultad de Artes y Diseño de la UNAM. Ha desarrollado familias tipográficas para clientes como el Fondo de Cultura Económica, Librerías Gandhi y el Gobierno Federal de México. Ha obtenido en dos ocasiones el certificado en excelencia de diseño tipográfico por el Type Directors Club de Nueva York, el máximo galardón de su categoría a nivel mundial (Fondo, 2008; Espinosa Nova, 2010).
