This talk by Gabriel Hoosain Khan imagines different worlds in higher education through creative and participatory methods.
In recent years, sexual and gender-based violence, homophobia and transphobia, and racism has been well documented at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
In this oppressive environment, student activists and transformation agents argue that institutional responses to sexual and gender-based violence (among other forms of oppression) have done little to shift the patriarchal and cis-heteronormative status quo.
Gabriel developed TransformLAB as a small and tactical response to this oppressive context. TransformLAB was imagined as a creative and uncensored space for transformation agents and student activists, who are often silenced and coerced in higher education.
A group of 16 transformation agents participated in a four-month long online zine-making workshop. The extended workshop invited participants to dream about queer, decolonial, feminist and anti-racist alternatives in higher education. The intervention culminated in a zine, and the zine imagines queer, decolonial, feminist and anti-racist alternatives in higher education.
About the speaker: Gabriel specializes in developing creative methodologies (such as art, drama, and creative writing) to facilitate dialogues and healing, conduct participatory action research, and develop strategic responses to trauma and violence. Gabriel has experience in managing and implementing regional projects in southern Africa on topics related to gender and sexuality, poverty and hunger, and diversity and inclusion. Gabriel last worked at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where they piloted the innovative Creative Change Laboratory (CCoLAB). The project created an art-activism laboratory in collaboration with youth on the margins of Cape Town. Gabriel is currently pursuing their PhD at the University of Brighton.
